Whether you’re my Grand Prize winner or not, I want to help you get your closet organized. Closet organization is a big part of my business, and no surprise: an orderly closet can make a real difference in your everyday routines. Follow these three easy steps to an organized, easy-to-navigate closet, and you’ll find yourself a little less pressed for time on those hectic mornings.
- First, we purge: Now is a great time to honestly evaluate last season’s clothing. Think of your closet as a boutique: take an inventory of what you have, and get rid of the things that aren’t moving. If you didn’t wear it all summer, you’re probably not going to wear it next summer, so move out the duds and donate them to a worthy charity – or save them in a bin for next summer’s consignment.
- Second, we store: Once the unused inventory is gone, you can take last season’s keepers and store them (this includes shoes, handbags, and summer accessories too). This will free up valuable closet real estate for your fall wardrobe. The only items that should be in your closet now are clothing and accessories for the current season – unless you travel frequently to warmer climates.
- Third, we evaluate: Last years trendy pieces might be this year’s ‘I’m so over it’ items. Take a hard look at your fall wardrobe, and edit. Why hold onto clothes that don’t fit perfectly, and don’t make you feel fabulous? Trust me, we’ve all suffered from buyer’s remorse at one time or another – but just because you paid way too much for a pair of shoes, you shouldn’t keep them if they kill your feet. They only thing uncomfortable wardrobe items do is take up valuable wardrobe space. So set those Jimmy Choos free in a consignment shop: you’ll get a portion of your purchase price back, and you won’t find yourself constantly irritated by the sight of them.
- Fourth, we organize: Getting dressed isn’t a chore when you know where everything is. A well organized closet uses all available space to its fullest potential; this is true whether you have a walk in closet or a cubby-sized reach-in. The trick is to use every inch of space from floor to ceiling. Keep your most frequently worn items and favorite pieces front and center, to make getting dressed a cinch.
- Fifth (and this is the best part), we buy: You may notice that you need a few things to keep your wardrobe from looking like yesterday’s news. Pull out your favorite fashion mag and fill in the blanks. A trip to a bargain overstock store like Marshalls or TJ Maxx can solve just about any temporary fashion crisis.
Again, if you have any questions or need any specific advice, ask away. And don’t forget to enter your email for a chance to win that Closet Makeover!
Cheers!
Candita Clayton

My mom does so much for our family and she barely has time for herself let alone take out a day to clean out her closet! This would be the best gift for her ever! =)
